Open houses are one of the most effective ways to share the value of Toastmasters—but calling it an “open house” may screen, “we need members” and turn some guests away from stepping foot in a meeting.
Instead, consider using an engaging meeting title or theme that resonates with potential guests. For example, “Master the Art of Public Speaking” or “Boost Your Confidence in 60 Minutes” can draw in those seeking personal growth. Provide an “Open House with Purpose!” which will draw in more guests.
Don’t forget to prepare for guests!
Tips to Make Your Event Successful:
- Create a Compelling Theme: Align your topic with common goals—leadership, communication, or career advancement.
- Create a Marketing Plan: What organizations, companies, and groups can you invite to the meeting? Make sure you post it on community boards, social media, and with human resources departments as a way to grow their talent. Include a clear call-to-action like “Join us for an interactive session!”
- Leverage Toastmasters Tools: Use the Open House Kit from Toastmasters International, which includes customizable flyers, social media graphics, and press release templates.
- Share Member “My WHY” Stories: Personal testimonials during the meeting help guests see real-world benefits. Sell the benefits of Toastmasters.
- Create Welcome Packets: Create a folder or take away packet for guests. Share with them how they can use the materials as a development skill building with their employer, provide a membership form (filled out as much as possible), and other materials for them to review and make an informed decision.
- Follow Up: Collect contact information and send a warm thank-you email with details on how to become a member or visit a regular meeting.
An open house is more than a membership drive — it’s an experience. By combining creativity with proven resources, you’ll turn guests into engaged members.
