Nothing changed about the fish in the tank. 🐠 Yet everything improved. A small addition to the ecosystem—a snail—quietly transformed our fish tank. What stood out wasn’t the fish.

It was the environment

  • Clearer water
  • Natural harmony
  • Less need for constant intervention

It was a simple but powerful reminder that growth—personal or professional—is rarely about pushing harder. More often, it’s about designing the right environment.

Growth Doesn’t Come From Pressure. It Comes From Conditions

The right environment:

  • reduces friction
  • supports better decisions
  • allows people to perform at their best

This principle sits at the very heart of coaching. And it’s why coaching works so powerfully inside Toastmasters, especially through the Club Coach role.

Coaching Is Not What Many People Think

There’s a common misunderstanding about coaching, especially in volunteer leadership settings.

Coaching is not:

  • Telling people what to do
  • Fixing problems for them
  • Taking over when things feel messy
  • Controlling outcomes

Those approaches may feel helpful in the moment, but they often create dependency instead of development.

Coaching Is a Leadership Skill

At its best, coaching is about strengthening thinking.

Coaching is:

  • Creating ownership and confidence

For the club, effective coaching:

Clubs stop waiting to be rescued and start leading themselves.
